Newest firstCannabis use increases the risk of psychosis, but cannabis-based medicinal products may provide additional therapeutic opportunities. Decriminalisation of cannabis has led to wider availability in certain jurisdictions, while in the UK regulated medicinal preparations are not readily accessible. A more balanced approach could reduce harms while maximising potential therapeutic benefits.
Open article record in new tab ↗AIMS: Substance-induced mental disorders (SIMD) are an under-recognized consequence of psychoactive substance use, despite major implications for treatment needs, health service demand and outcomes. In the context of British Columbia's (BC's) ongoing toxic drug emergency, we aimed to (1) estimate the incidence and prevalence of SIMD in the provincial population and (2) describe socio-demographic, geographic, clini…
Introduction As cannabis policies become more liberal, and products increasingly potent, it is important to monitor changes in rates of cannabis use and those at risk of harm. We used data from the largest national mental health survey in Australia to examine changes in prevalence, associations and comorbidity of past 12-month cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) from 2007 to 2020-22. Methods Data were dra…
Background Substance use disorder (SUD) is a rapidly growing public health challenge in developing countries across socioeconomic divides. In sub-Saharan Africa, the situation of SUD is particularly concerning and largely unexplored, with projections indicating a worsening trend. Aims This study seeks to fill the gap by generating insights into the multifaceted nature of alcohol and drug use disorders among a youn…
Open article record in new tab ↗AbstractIntroductionCannabis and alcohol outlets may independently and jointly influence the health of those in their surrounding neighbourhoods. State and local policy determines the establishment of cannabis and alcohol outlets in Michigan, potentially leading to their inequitable distribution and contribution to health disparities. This ecological study examined associations among deprivation, racial makeup and…
Introduction This study quantifies excess mortality in Spain during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and assesses whether mortality levels are returning to pre-pandemic patterns. Methods Expected mortality was estimated using stochastic forecasting models calibrated on pre-pandemic data (1990-2019) and compared with observed mortality over the period 2020-2023. The analysis relies on a multi-model framework includi…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background and aims The impact of exposure to cannabis dispensaries on young adult cannabis use may depend on how exposures and outcomes are defined. We estimated associations of dispensary exposure with young adult cannabis use across: (a) a government-maintained licensed dispensaries registry versus a web-scraped list of licensed and unlicensed dispensaries; and (b) varying modes of cannabis modes (i.e. smoked,…
Abstract Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease diagnosed according to its histopathologic pattern of tau proteinopathy (“tauopathy”). It is increasingly appreciated that PSP is heterogeneous in both clinical and pathological presentations. However, the prevalence of PSP subtypes, in comparison to other tauopathies, remain incompletely characterized. Here we analyzed NACC Neuropatholog…
Background and aims The global cannabidiol (CBD) market has expanded in recent years. Several studies suggest CBD use, whether for medical or recreational purposes, is on the rise; however, no systematic assessments of its prevalence have been conducted so far. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of CBD use in North America and Europe independently. Methods Searches were conducted in PubMed, PsycIN…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background In England, 354 000 people were homeless on a given night in 2024. It has long been recognised that the physical and mental health of people who are homeless is poorer than for those who are stably housed. There are few peer-reviewed studies to inform health- and social care around depression or anxiety for people who are homeless in this setting. Aims To measure the symptoms of depression and anxiety a…
Open article record in new tab ↗BackgroundPopulation-level data on preclinical heart failure (HF) remain limited because most epidemiological studies focus on symptomatic HF. We therefore developed an administrative-data algorithm to classify HF stages across the national population and describe temporal trends, stage transitions, and mortality across the HF continuum. MethodsUsing a claims-based staging framework adapted from the Universal Defi…
Open article record in new tab ↗This study mapped the age- and region-specific risks of eye diseases in the Brazilian population, evaluating temporal trends and geographical inequalities in access to healthcare. Secondary data from DATASUS, covering the 27 Brazilian federative units from 2010 to 2024, were used, employing hierarchical negative binomial regression. A significant national increase in hospital admission rates was observed during th…
Open article record in new tab ↗BackgroundThe NDM carbapenemase enables Gram-negative bacteria to hydrolyse almost all {beta}-lactam antibiotics. In 2023, a large increase of blaNDM in clinical isolates was identified in a clinical microbiology laboratory serving hospitals and GP practices in Merseyside, UK, raising concerns of a larger outbreak. MethodsWe used short read whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatic analyses to identify the outbrea…
BackgroundLoneliness is common and deleterious to health. Yet little is known about its population burden and health correlates in the US. We aimed to determine the prevalence of loneliness and characterize its health and social functioning correlates among US adults. MethodsWith data from the National Health Interview Study (2024), we used survey-weighted Poisson regression to estimate relative risks (RR) and 95%…
Open article record in new tab ↗AimTo systematically review all population-based studies reporting the prevalence or incidence of neurodegenerative diseases among adults aged 50 and older in Russia. Subject and MethodsWe systematically searched Medline, Scopus, Embase, and eLibrary from inception to January 2025. The search included peer-reviewed articles, grey literature, and citation checking. Cross-sectional and cohort studies were eligible i…
Open article record in new tab ↗We performed the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of pain with neuropathic characteristics using Bayesian methods to correct prevalence estimates for the use of screening tools with imperfect sensitivity and specificity (CRD42023416845). We searched major databases for national or regional epidemiological studies that reported the prevalence of pain with neuropathic characteristics, as i…
Open article record in new tab ↗Maternal cannabis use in pregnancy is reported to be associated with perinatal and neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring. Such associations, however, may be biased by residual confounding by socioeconomic position (SEP). To assess confounding, we use paternal cannabis use in pregnancy as a negative control exposure. We use data from 15,013 mother-father-child trios from the ALSPAC birth cohort, with participant…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are associated with a substantial economic burden to the healthcare system despite their relatively low incidence and prevalence compared to other more common malignancies. This study aimed to evaluate trends in GIST-related hospitalizations, inpatient mortality, and the financial burden of GISTs in the United States. Methods The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) da…
Background Adolescence is a key developmental period associated with an increased risk of experiencing cannabis-related problems. Identifying modifiable risk factors prior to the onset of cannabis use could help inform preventative interventions. Method Analysis nested within a UK prospective birth cohort study, the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Participants (n = 6,049) provided data on cannabis…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background and hypothesis Psychotic symptoms are common in adolescents and predictive of psychiatric disorders. Numerous risk factors have been shown to precede psychiatric disorders. However, investigating individual risk factors does not account for the cumulative effect these risk factors may have. Therefore, we combined well-researched environmental risk factors for psychotic disorder in a composite measure: t…
