Newest firstCannabis use can have detrimental effects on adolescents' mental health, often co-occurring with child and adolescent psychiatric disorders (CAPD). This study assessed diagnostic prevalence trends in cannabis-related disorders and co-occurring diagnosed CAPD in adolescents receiving outpatient treatment in Germany. Outpatient claims data from the national public health insurance system, covering almost 4 million c…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background and hypothesis A sex difference in the clinical presentation of schizophrenia is well known. Males have on average an earlier symptom onset, worse functional capacity, and more negative symptoms. Studies on the neurobiological correlates of psychosis show that brain endocannabinoid system (ECS) is dysregulated in male patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP). We now evaluated whether the brain ECS is…
N-arachidonoylethanolamine (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) are lipid signalling molecules within the endocannabinoid system, which regulates numerous physiological processes and is implicated in diverse pathological conditions. Given the limited feasibility of obtaining human tissue samples, quantifying AEA and 2-AG in biological matrices is essential for understanding the endocannabinoid system in humans.…
Open article record in new tab ↗Significance Flavor accessories (e.g., flavor capsules), which are separate products that can be used with combustible tobacco products to alter their flavor, are on the market. These new products may bypass flavor restrictions and appeal to youth, yet no research has examined US youth awareness or use of flavor accessories. This study aimed to examine awareness and use of flavor accessories among a sample of yout…
Objective The objective of this study was to examine whether cannabis exposure calls to the British Columbia Drug and Poison Information Centre (DPIC) were impacted by the legalization of non-medical cannabis in Canada. Methods We fit interrupted time series models to monthly counts of cannabis cases from 2013 to 2021, stratified by age and cannabis form. We set the intervention month to October 2018 legalization…
This study examined the prevalence and patterns of polydrug use among a national sample of civilians aged 12 years or older, with a focus on polydrug use involving opioids, assessing the influence of the first drug used on these behaviors. Using 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data, five mutually exclusive drug groups were identified in a hierarchical order: opioid use, stimulant or psychoactiv…
Purpose This study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to examine associations between the use of four illicit drugs (cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine) and the dental caries experience among adults in the US using the Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index. Materials and methods Data from NHANES 2017-2018, a cross-sectional study that included adults…
Dyadic coping among sexual minority men (SMM) has been a focus of HIV prevention research for decades, but few studies have examined relationship quality as a covariate of HIV care cascade outcomes (ART adherence and an undetectable viral load (VL)). This study utilized a 5-category relationship status variable (single; non-monogamous, sero-discordant; non-monogamous, sero-concordant; monogamous, sero-discordant;…
Open article record in new tab ↗Introduction and aims Cannabis use among university students is a growing concern, particularly in demanding medical programs. We estimated prevalence, identified predictors, and compared coping strategies among medical students in Uganda. Design and methods Cross-sectional survey of 318 undergraduates at Kampala International University (Western Campus). Cannabis use and hazardous/disordered use were screened wit…
The rapid emergence of synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) poses challenges for drug testing, particularly when analyzing urine samples due to the rapid metabolization of the parent compounds. In early 2023, two novel SCRAs were reported to the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA): ADMB-3TMS-PrINACA and Cumyl-3TMS-PrINACA, which are both indazole SCRAs featuring a trimethylsilyl propyl moiety connected t…
Cannabis use increases the risk of psychosis, but cannabis-based medicinal products may provide additional therapeutic opportunities. Decriminalisation of cannabis has led to wider availability in certain jurisdictions, while in the UK regulated medicinal preparations are not readily accessible. A more balanced approach could reduce harms while maximising potential therapeutic benefits.
Open article record in new tab ↗Objective To evaluate trends in CHS hospitalizations in Canada, including their frequency and individual characteristics. Methods This study utilized data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information's Discharge Abstract Database to perform descriptive data analysis and employed JoinPoint Trend Analysis Software to analyze annual percent change (APC) and average annual percent change (AAPC) in hospitalizatio…
Open article record in new tab ↗Purpose Nicotine and cannabis are commonly co-used among adolescents and young adults (AYAs). Same session co-use has more negative effects than co-use that does not overlap. Little is known about how or why these products are used within the same session. Enhanced understanding of this behavior pattern can be leveraged to reduce co-use in this population. Methods Connecticut AYAs (15-20 years old) who self-report…
Open article record in new tab ↗Objective Xerostomia (dry mouth) is a common condition that negatively impacts life quality for adults of all ages. Yet, xerostomia has primarily been studied among older adults and populations at high risk of dry mouth, with no widely-available self-reported instrument to assess xerostomia accurately among younger populations. This study aimed to develop a brief xerostomia assessment tool specifically designed fo…
Open article record in new tab ↗Hemp is a high-yield crop traditionally cultivated for fiber used in products such as paper, textiles, ropes, and animal bedding, and more recently for sustainable applications in biofuels, insulation, and bioplastics. Beyond fiber, hemp is rich in phytochemicals. More than 500 compounds including cannabinoids, terpenes, phenolics, phytosterols, and tocopherols are accumulated in leaves, flowers, and seeds, which…
Open article record in new tab ↗Although random assignment is the standard for drawing causal inferences within clinical trials, it is generally precluded in legal market cannabis research given its federal classification as a schedule 1 drug. Unfortunately, this may cause selection bias and compromise internal validity, and thus, alternative approaches are necessary. One such approach in this context, as well as more broadly, is quasi-random as…
Open article record in new tab ↗Objectives Poor adherence to psychopharmacological treatment may contribute to relapses in bipolar disorder (BD). We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify factors associated with poor adherence in BD. Methods The protocol was registered in Open Science Framework Registries (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/2KZFJ). We searched main electronic databases through March 2025. Random-effects meta-an…
Introduction Cannabidiol (CBD), a nonpsychoactive compound derived from Cannabis sativa, has shown potential to influence cellular processes that are important for dental tissue repair. The aim of this scoping review was to map in vitro studies evaluating the influence of CBD on the osteogenic/odontogenic differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) in order to contribute to a better understanding of i…
Pain is prevalent among people with HIV (PWH), and many PWH who experience pain also use substances (illicit drug and/or unhealthy alcohol use). While cocaine use and cocaine and alcohol co-use are prevalent in this population, their effects on pain in PWH are unknown. This study aims to investigate the association of cocaine use and co-use of cocaine and alcohol with pain interference among PWH. We completed a se…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background Educational attainment (EA), which comprises cognitive (CogEA) and noncognitive (NonCogEA) components, is positively genetically correlated with alcohol and cannabis use but negatively correlated with alcohol and cannabis use disorders (AUD and CUD). These paradoxical associations suggest that shared genetic influences with EA may differ by level of substance involvement. Methods To test this, we examin…
