Newest firstThis research letter compared the prevalence of qualifying conditions among patients certified to use medical cannabis in Florida to population-based prevalence estimates for the same conditions and observed marked discrepancies. These findings highlight conditions that appear to be significant reasons for patients to consider medical cannabis, providing important research priorities for future research on its eff…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) increasingly use cannabis. Studies investigating the effectiveness and safety of cannabis as a therapeutic option for IBD have reported conflicting findings, and recent reviews have not incorporated evidence from real-world studies. This systematic review assessed controlled non-interventional studies and interventional trials evaluating the effectiveness o…
Cannabis use increases the risk of psychosis, but cannabis-based medicinal products may provide additional therapeutic opportunities. Decriminalisation of cannabis has led to wider availability in certain jurisdictions, while in the UK regulated medicinal preparations are not readily accessible. A more balanced approach could reduce harms while maximising potential therapeutic benefits.
Open article record in new tab ↗Background: Several factors influence reasons for cannabis use in the U.S. This study examines reasons for cannabis use (recreational only, medical only, both) and their frequency of use in association with demographic variables, health-risk behaviors, legal status, and chronic disease. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 466,355 adults (aged ≥18) in the 2018-2021 BRFSS surveys in areas that admini…
Open article record in new tab ↗Introduction Changes in regulatory policies regarding cannabis have led to a rapid expansion of the cannabis market and a substantial increase in cannabis sales. This study examined medicinal and recreational cannabis demand in a hypothetical legalisation scenario in Spain among people who use over-the-counter CBD, THC only and CBD + THC. Methods A cross-sectional study comprising 1492 participants aged 16-30. The…
Background Marijuana initiation among adults aged 50 years and older has increased substantially. Although acute tetrahydrocannabinol exposure can impair psychomotor function, less is known about how real-world medical marijuana initiation relates to functional tasks such as driving in mid-to-late life. Objective The objective of our study was to evaluate the feasibility of recruiting and retaining adults aged 50…
Purpose The global burden of chronic health conditions is significant. Medicinal cannabis (MC) is a legalised treatment option for patients with chronic health conditions in some countries. Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is an important patient-reported outcome across all chronic health conditions. We aimed to determine how studies of MC therapy justify, measure, and report HRQL, and assess the current evid…
Background Medical cannabis is now commonly prescribed for a range of chronic health conditions. Many medical cannabis products contain delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the intoxicating component in cannabis, though it is unclear whether these products produce impairment when used as prescribed and at therapeutic doses. With current Australian laws prohibiting driving with any amount of THC in one's system, thi…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background Conventional treatments have been frequently reported to offer partial relief for some individuals managing arthritis pain and related symptoms, leading many to consider alternative options, such as cannabis. Informed decision-making about cannabis use requires patients to weigh potential benefits and risks in light of their personal values and preferences. Objective This study aims to systematically de…
Medicinal cannabis use is increasing worldwide, yet its impacts on driving safety in frequent users are not clearly understood. A more comprehensive understanding of the effects of THC on driving behaviour in frequent users is needed to guide drug driving policy and evidence-based advice for medicinal cannabis consumers. This study investigated the acute effects of orally ingested THC oil on medicinal cannabis use…
The legal cannabis industry is expanding rapidly across the United States, yet indoor air quality (IAQ) characterizations of cultivation facilities remain scarce. Oklahoma's medical marijuana program grew to over 7,300 commercial licenses and 380,000 registered patients by 2023, but no published study has characterized occupational exposures within the state's cultivation facilities. Cannabis workers face poorly u…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background Population data on cannabis use-beyond prevalence and frequency of use-in the UK is lacking, yet needed to inform harm reduction messaging about cannabis. This study examined (a) recreational and medical cannabis use; (b) cannabis product use; (c) cannabis risk perceptions via three different routes of administration; (d) how product use and risk perceptions vary by reasons for use and higher risk use.…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background Two-thirds of adults in the United States (U.S.) find recreational and medical cannabis use acceptable. Evidence shows that cannabis use is an effective treatment for pain, and as a harm reducing therapeutic for Substance Use Disorder (SUD). In contrast to most SUD treatment models, some models allow illegal substance use as a harm reduction strategy, which is the case for the SUD treatment program exam…
Previous research has shown medical cannabis (MC) to help reduce anxiety for some individuals, although most studies show trends using cross-sectional designs or conduct secondary analyses of preexisting data. The present study systematically tracked 416 registered MC patients in Florida across 45 days to assess daily shifts in anxiety levels. Using daily recording software, collected data included the frequency o…
Background Endometriosis, affecting 6%-10% of reproductive-age women, causes chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and infertility. Current treatments have limitations and consequently there is rising interest in effects of cannabis on pain and inflammation associated with endometriosis. Aims This scoping review primarily aimed to characterise the effects of cannabis on endometriosis-associated pain and detail the re…
Open article record in new tab ↗Marijuana use in the United States (U.S.) has diversified alongside expanding legalization, yet little is known about the psychosocial factors that distinguish medical from recreational use. This study examined whether psychological distress mediates the association between perceived social isolation (i.e., loneliness) and marijuana use type among U.S. adults. We analyzed cross-sectional, nationally representative…
Open article record in new tab ↗Introduction Fibromyalgia is a common condition characterised by widespread chronic pain, associated with comorbid mental health disorders and reduced quality of life. Preclinical data suggest cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) may have potential benefits in fibromyalgia, but there is a paucity of high-quality clinical evidence. This study aims to assess the change in patient-reported outcome measures (PROM…
There is renewed interest in investigating the analgesic properties of cannabis for musculoskeletal joint pain; however, available data remain limited. This cross-sectional study was designed with the objective of evaluating patients' perceptions regarding the effect of cannabis on arthritis pain. Patients with arthritis pain presenting at one of three orthopedic clinics were asked to complete the study questionna…
Background In Colorado, regulations for recreational and medical cannabis sales require tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration is printed on all products. Labeled THC concentrations can vary by +/-15% of what is in the product. Studies show THC concentrations recorded on product labels are not always reflective of the THC concentration in the cannabis product and there is evidence consumers make purchasing decis…
Open article record in new tab ↗There has been a sharp increase in recent years in the use of medical cannabis in Israel. However, little is known about the attitudes and knowledge about medical cannabis among nursing students, particularly those from the religious/ultra-Orthodox sector. It is important for nurses to know about medical cannabis because they are at the forefront of care and provide patient guidance. A cross-sectional study sample…
