Newest firstCannabis use increases the risk of psychosis, but cannabis-based medicinal products may provide additional therapeutic opportunities. Decriminalisation of cannabis has led to wider availability in certain jurisdictions, while in the UK regulated medicinal preparations are not readily accessible. A more balanced approach could reduce harms while maximising potential therapeutic benefits.
Open article record in new tab ↗Background: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adulthood is frequently associated with complex psychiatric comorbidity, including high rates of Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), which may influence treatment outcomes. Although pharmacological treatments are effective for core ADHD symptoms, real-world response remains heterogeneous, and the contribution of specific substance-related and neurodevelopm…
Objectives Syria has undergone significant socio-political turmoil since 2011 as internal conflict displaced portions of the population, destroyed infrastructure, and destabilized the economy. In the context of multilevel healthcare system disruptions, there have been increasing reports of substance use. This study seeks to evaluate patterns of substance use in Northwestern Syria. Methods Trained staff administere…
Background Cannabinoids are increasingly discussed as adjuncts in addiction treatment, yet whether they improve clinically meaningful substance use disorder (SUD) outcomes beyond short-term symptom relief is unresolved. We determined whether cannabinoid exposure confers directional efficacy across opioid, alcohol, cocaine, tobacco, and methamphetamine use disorders, distinguishing symptomatic targets from sustaine…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background Substance use disorders (SUDs) remain a major source of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States. This study described trends in the burden of SUDs from 1990 to 2019 by substance, sex, and age, and examined whether state-level policy environments and behavioral health budgets differed across states with the highest and lowest SUD-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Methods We…
Introduction Cannabis is used globally. In Spain, it is often used in combination with tobacco, which may exacerbate withdrawal severity. Currently, no validated instrument exists to assess cannabis withdrawal symptoms in Spanish populations. This study aimed to validate the 15-item Cannabis (Marijuana) Withdrawal Checklist (CWC) for Spanish-speaking individuals who co-use cannabis and tobacco. Materials and metho…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted face-to-face alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment services and prompted greater use of telehealth. This study measured the impact of COVID-19 on outpatient treatment episodes before, during, and after stay-at-home orders were introduced. Methods This observational study used routinely collected data from community-based non-government AOD services in New South Wales (NS…
Aims and method There is a pressing need for standardised and comprehensive research frameworks to evaluate both the therapeutic benefits and risks of dependency and misuse associated with medical cannabis. We address the issue of abuse potential or misuse liability by examining research data and what amounts to existing clinical dogma for validity and generalisability. We undertook a broad scoping approach to exp…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background In England, 354 000 people were homeless on a given night in 2024. It has long been recognised that the physical and mental health of people who are homeless is poorer than for those who are stably housed. There are few peer-reviewed studies to inform health- and social care around depression or anxiety for people who are homeless in this setting. Aims To measure the symptoms of depression and anxiety a…

This study examined healthcare utilization patterns and sociodemographic correlates among COD adults using data from the All of Us Research Program (2018-2023). MethodsElectronic health record data were analyzed for adults aged…
Open article record in new tab ↗Unsatisfactory sleep is a worldwide concern, as evidenced by the high prevalence of insomnia symptoms and diagnosis in the general population, and an issue that has also risen among adolescents. These circumstances are a cause of worry due to, among other factors, the observed bidirectional association of sleep disturbances and the risk of substance use disorder development. In this regard, across the globe, sever…
Open article record in new tab ↗Background Germany provides a worldwide almost unique legal framework for offenders with substance use disorders through § 64 of the German Criminal Code, mandating a two-year multimodal therapy including an in-house clinical treatment period followed by a reintegration phase with gradually reduced supervision. During this phase, lapses are often concealed, with synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) serving as a potential…
Open article record in new tab ↗Purpose The temporal trend of suicide in patients with cannabis use disorder (CUD) is important to investigate, considering the recent increases in THC concentration in cannabis products. This study describes the annual suicide rates in patients with CUD from 2010 to 2021. To investigate if any change in suicide rate was specific to CUD, we compared these suicide rates with corresponding data for patients with alc…
Introduction/objective Schizophrenia with substance use disorder is a complex clinical condition that may increase treatment resistance. Cannabis use disorder is frequently associated with psychosis and the causal link has still to be defined. Partial D2/3 agonists may ensure limbic dopamine release normalization while avoiding reduced frontocortical dopamine release, which would contribute to negative symptoms. W…
Background Refugees seem to be at enhanced risk for substance use disorders. At the same time, they have less access to services and their health needs remain poorly understood. This study aims to evaluate the specific needs of refugees as compared to German-born individuals seeking help for substance use disorders. Methods We conducted an observational case-control study using all treatment episodes in outpatient…
Background/Objectives: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with opioid use disorder (OUD) frequently have co-occurring psychiatric conditions and substance use disorders (SUDs). This study evaluated the association of psychiatric comorbidities and other SUDs with treatment retention and urine drug test (UDT) results in AYAs with OUD. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included AYAs enrolled in the Substance…
Background and aims The co-occurrence of behavioral addictions (BAs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) or other mental health problems (MHPs) is well documented. However, there is limited evidence on associations between changes in the severity of BAs, SUDs, and MHPs, or their directions of influence or causation. Methods A non-self-selecting sample of 5,611 young Swiss men (mean age 25.5 at baseline and 28.3 at…
BackgroundMental health and substance use disorders typically onset during youth and commonly co-occur. Integrated treatment of two or more co-existing mental health and substance use disorders (i.e., concurrent disorders) is increasingly prevalent in real-world clinical settings. However, the depth of the evidence base on best practices remains unclear.ObjectivesThis scoping review aimed to identify, map and summ…
Substance use disorders (SUDs) are widely prevalent in many countries, with the highest rates observed in nicotine and alcohol use, followed by opioid and cannabis use disorders. Within the field of SUDs, nutrition has become an increasingly important area of focus in both epidemiology and public health, as malnutrition is frequently observed among individuals affected by these disorders. Research indicates that p…
Background: Treatment dropout in substance use disorder (SUD) programs poses a significant challenge to achieving successful outcomes and leads to legal and financial issues. Socioeconomic factors have been identified as key contributors to treatment attrition; yet, the specific impact of patients' socioeconomic conditions remains underexplored. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between soci…
