Newest firstHemp seeds and derived products were recently re-evaluated in the food sector, thanks to their high nutritional value and absence of gluten. This increasing diffusion required to investigate the occurrence of mycotoxins, in particular of Alternaria toxins (ALTs), has been uncovered at high levels in previous work. An integrated approach was involved in this study. First, Alternaria spp. incidence and ALTs were det…
Open article record in new tab ↗Hemp seeds (Cannabis sativa L.) have received considerable attention due to their nutrient and phytochemical content. However, while the nutritional and functional profile of whole hemp seeds has been adequately described in the literature, these aspects have not been investigated for hulled seeds, especially germinated hemp seeds. Therefore, the aim of this work was to explore the nutritional and functional profi…
Open article record in new tab ↗Introduction This research aims to synthesize luteolin derivatives from hemp seeds by means of chemical synthesis, improve the synthesis process, simplify the procedure, and increase the yield to obtain new luteolin derivatives. Additionally, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of hemp seed extracts and newly synthesized substances are tested to screen out substances with high anti-inflammatory and antiox…
Open article record in new tab ↗This work presents an innovative microwave-assisted subcritical water extraction (MA-SWE) approach for the simultaneous recovery of proteins and phenolic compounds from hemp seeds (HS). The extraction temperature (100-180 °C), time (5-60 min), and solid-to-liquid ratio (1:5-1:30 w/v) were optimized via Box-Behnken design. The effects of whole, crushed and defatted HS were investigated, with defatted HS exhibiting…
Open article record in new tab ↗The present research aimed to study the proximate composition, fatty acid profile, antiox-idant activity, total phenolic and N-trans-Caffeoyltyramine content of three distinct varieties of hemp seeds (Carmaenecta, Enectaliana and Enectarol, grown in a Mediterranean area (Central Italy), as feed in the diet of farm animals. Proximate composition was determined using the official methods of analyses; the fatty acid…
Open article record in new tab ↗Botanical varieties of hemp differ in chemical composition, plant morphology, agronomy, and industrial suitability. Hemp is popular for cultivation for the production of cannabinoid oil, fiber production, biomass, etc. The fertilization process is one of the most important factors affecting the plant, both its condition and chemical composition. So far, research has been carried out proving that hemp is a valuable…
The popularity of hemp cultivation for industrial purposes has been steadily growing for many years. With the addition of products derived from these plants to the Novel Food Catalogue, maintained by the European Commission, a significant increase in interest in hemp food is also expected. The aim of the study was to determine the characteristics of hempseed, oil, and oil cake samples produced from experimental pl…
Simple SummaryThere is increasing consumer demand for goat’s milk because it contains more nutrients and biologically active compounds than cow’s milk. However, the nutrition of goats can influence the composition of the milk, which can affect its functional activity. This research evaluates the effect of dietary inclusion of hemp seeds in goats fed with hay or mixed shrubs–grass rangeland, on the yield, fatty aci…
Open article record in new tab ↗The use of two nozzle diameters (6 and 8 mm) in a cold (50°C) hemp seed oil extraction process was evaluated in terms of extraction efficiency, and chemical composition and in vitro fermentation characteristics of the residual cake. Seeds of the varieties Futura 75 and Uso 31 were pressed using a mechanical press with a cooling device. Five pressings were carried out for each variety and nozzle size, the functiona…
This publication characterizes the nutritional value of the Polish hemp seeds of the 'Bialobrzeskie' and 'Henola' varieties, including the profile/content of fatty acids and amino acids. Hemp seeds were found to be rich in protein, fat, and dietary fiber. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) dominated the unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) profile. Their average share within the total fatty acids (FA) was as high as 75%.…
Open article record in new tab ↗The aim of the study was to use plant additives in the form of a mixture of seeds (linseed, amaranth and hemp) to increase the nutritional value and health-promoting values of poultry meatballs. Meatballs with 24% addition of wheat roll and three variants of meatballs: M1, M2, M3, with 24% addition seeds were tested. In the meatballs from group M1, the percentage of linseeds was 6%, amaranth 10%, and hemp 8%, resp…
Open article record in new tab ↗Omega-3 fatty acids support cardiometabolic health and reduce chronic low-grade inflammation. These fatty acids may impart their health benefits partly by modulating the endocannabinoidome and the gut microbiome, both of which are key regulators of metabolism and the inflammatory response. Whole hemp seeds (Cannabis sativa) are of exceptional nutritional value, being rich in omega-3 fatty acids. We assessed the ef…
Osteoarthritis is a type of degenerative joint disease that results from the breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone. Due to their antioxidants and anti-inflammatory action, the phytochemical constituents of many vegetable varieties could represent a new frontier for the treatment of patients with Osteoarthritis and are still being explored. The aim of this pilot human study was to investigate the effects…
Open article record in new tab ↗The weak but noteworthy presence of (poly)phenols in hemp seeds has been long overshadowed by the essential polyunsaturated fatty acids and digestible proteins, considered responsible for their high nutritional benefits. Instead, lignanamides and their biosynthetic precursors, phenylamides, seem to display interesting and diverse biological activities only partially clarified in the last decades. Herein, negative…
This study shows the antioxidant effect of a dietary hemp seed diet rich in ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) on oxidative status in sows during late gestation and lactation and their offspring. Ten pregnant sows were divided into two groups and fed either a control diet (CD) or a hemp diet (HD) containing 2% hemp seed meal for a period of 10 days before farrowing and 5% throughout the lactation period (21 d).…
