Alastair K Denniston
Professor Alastair Denniston is an NIHR Senior Investigator, Professor in Regulatory Science and Innovation at the University of Birmingham, and a Consultant Ophthalmologist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He is a leader in the innovation and adoption of artificial intelligence and innovative digital health technologies, with a focus on evaluation, regulation and safe implementation. He is Director of the UK’s Centre of Excellence for Regulatory Science and Innovation in AI & Digital Health (CERSI-AI), is a Member of the UK Government’s Regulatory Horizons Council, is Non-Executive Director to the UK’s Health Research Authority and in 2025 was appointed to Chair the UK Government's National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare. He was a co-founder of INSIGHT, the UK’s Health Data Research Hub for Eye Health, and is known for his work in building and advocating for inclusive data foundations for AI. He is passionate about supporting innovation in advanced digital and AI health technologies to accelerate the development of products that are effective, safe, and equitable, and that make a difference to people in the ‘real world’.
