Antony Chuter

Antony is a someone who has lived with pain for over 35 yrs. In the beginning, he lost everything, his home, his job, his relationship fell apart and he found that he had lost his purpose in life. After a number of years and with much support, Antony has returned to the workplace and now holds a number of roles where he supports patients who live with pain and acts as a champion for patient and public involvement. He has also been the co author on a number of publications where he ensures the patient/public voice is key. Antony's aim is to help find, recruit and support a community of people to help inform, shape and guide the studies he gets involved in. Antony was a Trustee of Pain UK from 2012 - 2024, Pain UK is an alliance of 48 charities providing a voice and support for people who live with chronic pain. Antony was succeded as chair of Pain UK in November 2022 after 10 years in the role. Antony still speaks on occasions about pain and campaigning for better awareness of the issues for people living with pain, as well as campaigning for a better choice of treatments for pain. Antony is a past chair of the Patient Liaison Committee at the British Pain Society, The Patient Liaison Committee and was responsible for ensuring that the views of patients are represented within the Society. Previously he was also the chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners 'Patient Partnership Group', where he ensured that the patient was at the centre of all the work of the College, he was also the lead author on ‘It’s your practice’ a guide to general practice for patients. In 2013 he was awarded the Colleges highest award ‘Honorary Fellowship’. Antony has also published several editorials in the College journal ‘The British Journal of General Practice’ (BJGP). Before the role at the RCGP, Antony was a volunteer tutor for the Expert Patient Programme CIC. He delivered hundreds of courses to over 2000 members of the public, both people with long term health conditions and also carers. Prior to the Expert Patient Programme, Antony was a listening volunteer for the Samaritans and also a member of the Board of Visitors at HMP Ford.
