Carlos Alberto Manssour Fraga
Carlos A. M. Fraga obtained a BSc degree in Pharmacy in 1988 and his MSc degree in Sciences (Medicinal Chemistry) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). After obtaining his Ph.D. degree from the Chemistry Institute of UFRJ in 1994, working with the synthesis of novel stable prostacyclin mimetics under the supervision of Professor Eliezer J. Barreiro, Carlos Alberto Manssour Fraga joined the Faculty of Pharmacy of UFRJ (Rio de Janeiro) as Assistant Professor in 1996 and was promoted to Associate Professor in May 2006. Then, Professor Fraga moved to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, where in 2012 he became Full Professor of Medicinal Chemistry. He was the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences from 2011 to 2015 and currently, he occupies the position of Vice-Director. Advisor of the Permanent Staff of Postgraduate Programs in Chemistry at the Institute of Chemistry of UFRJ and Postgraduate in Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of UFRJ, where he has supervised more than 60 Ph.D. Thesis and M.Sc. Dissertations in Medicinal Chemistry. He is the deputy Coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology of Drugs and Medicines (INCT-INOFAR). He contributed as author/inventor of more than 230 scientific articles in indexed international journals and 30 national and international patents in drug discovery. Dr. Fraga has been an effective member of the Brazilian Chemical Society since 1991, where he was Director of the Medicinal Chemistry Division from 2002 to 2004. He is currently a member of the editorial board of Pharmaceuticals (MDPI), Frontiers in Pharmacology, Chemical Biology and Drug Design (Wiley), and Section Editor of Biomedical Sciences of Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry (Bentham Sciences). Apart from teaching, Professor Fraga develops his research activities in LASSBio (Laboratório de Avaliação e Síntese de Substâncias Bioativas at UFRJ, www.lassbio.icb.ufrj.br), focusing on the design, synthesis, and pharmacological evaluation of novel drug candidates able to act in multifactorial diseases, with particular emphasis in the use of N‐acylhydrazone framework as a privileged structure to discover novel therapeutically valuable compounds.
