Carvalho M

Márcia Carvalho is an Associate Professor of Toxicology at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University Fernando Pessoa (UFP, Porto, Portugal) and an independent researcher in the LAQV-REQUIMTE Unit (FFUP, Porto). She is also a collaborator researcher at the RISE-Health, UFP Unit (UFP, Portugal). Márcia holds a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (FFUP), a post-graduate Master's degree in Quality Control - Scientific Area in Drug Substances and Medicinal Plants at FFUP, and a Ph.D. in Toxicology at FFUP. Her primary research interests include: (1) toxicological and toxicometabolomic studies to investigate the mechanisms of toxicity of xenobiotics (particularly pharmaceuticals and drugs of abuse) using in vivo and in vitro experimental model systems; (2) environmental toxicology (particularly pollutants such as heavy metals, micro- and nanoplastics, and pharmaceuticals); and (3) metabolomics to identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for urological cancers. Márcia has published 135 papers in international scientific periodicals, with over 29,000 citations. She edited 2 books and contributed with 8 book chapters (h-index of 56, Scopus). Since 2022, she has been recognized as one of the top 2% scientists in the world across all fields and subfields of research, a distinction conferred by Stanford University (United States). She currently serves on the Editorial Boards of Archives of Toxicology (Springer), Metabolites, Psychoactives, Pharmaceuticals (MDPI), and Frontiers in Toxicology. She has acted as Guest Editor for the Special Issues Cancer Metabolomics 2018 (Metabolites), Toxicometabolomics (Metabolites), Chronic Kidney Disease: Underlying Molecular Mechanisms (IJMS), Aging and Chronic Kidney Disease (IJMS), Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology of Cannabis-Based Medicinal Products (Psychoactives, ongoing), Advances in Anticancer Drug Metabolism Research: Implications for Personalized Therapeutics (Pharmaceuticals, ongoing), and Chronic Kidney Disease: Underlying Molecular Mechanisms 2.0 (IJMS, ongoing). In addition, she has been an active reviewer for several national and international journals in the fields of toxicology, metabolomics, oncology, and environmental sciences. Since 2021, she has been a member of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Consortium at the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). She is also the supervisor or co-supervisor of 8 Ph.D. theses (7 completed) and over 80 master's and graduation theses.
