Baraka Aloyce Onjare
I am a digital health consultant with 17 years of experience in developing innovative technological solutions. My expertise includes working extensively on the adaptation and implementation of Digital Adherence Technologies (DAT), as well as designing and optimizing digital health systems, data visualization, and analytical tools. Previously, I served as an IT manager for the Tanzanian National TB and Leprosy Programme, where I was instrumental in designing and implementing one of the first case-based DHIS2 trackers for managing TB patients in Tanzania. This initiative replaced all paper records at the district level. I have also had the opportunity to participate in and lead two funded research projects aimed at providing evidence on the impact of Digital Adherence Technologies on TB treatment. These implementation research projects focused on the introduction of these tools and gathering insights on their use to contribute to policies and guidelines. Through this work, I have collaborated with prominent researchers worldwide, enhancing my experience in scientific research. Currently, I serve as a Regional Digital Health Consultant, providing technical assistance on Digital Adherence Technology projects. Drawing on my experiences, I support a patient-centered framework (PCF) and DAT implementation in Eswatini, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Lesotho. My contributions include integrating smart pill boxes into the DHIS2 system and developing a publicly available generic DHIS2 adherence app. I also led the adaptation of the WHO Prevent TB app for the Tanzanian DHIS2 instance, focusing on the overall management of TB preventive therapy. At present, I am working with Tanzania to revamp the USSD mobile self-screening app for digital active case finding, aiming to locate individuals with TB who are still undiagnosed. Based on my previous experience with this tool, I am focusing on creating a sustainable implementation strategy by removing silos and integrating it into the National Electronic TB System.
