Betty Raman
Betty Raman is an Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Oxford University Hospitals, specialising in cardiovascular imaging and inherited cardiomyopathies. She trained in cardiology in Australia before moving to Oxford in 2015, where she completed a DPhil in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Her research programme focuses on translating advanced cardiovascular imaging into clinically useful tools for risk stratification, disease monitoring and precision therapy in inherited cardiomyopathies. Her work spans cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), cardiac CT and multimodality imaging, with particular interests in myocardial tissue characterisation, perfusion, oxygenation, energetics and diffusion tensor CMR. She leads translational studies in inherited cardiomyopathies and works at the interface of imaging, genetics and clinical trials to understand disease mechanisms, identify patients at risk of progression and develop imaging endpoints for emerging disease-modifying and genetic therapies. She is a Wellcome Clinical Career Development Fellow, Principal Investigator within the BHF Oxford Centre of Research Excellence, and NIHR South Central Regional Cardiology Research Delivery Network Lead. She is also Co-Director of the British Heart Foundation Oxford–Imperial Doctoral Training Programme in Health Technology, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, supporting interdisciplinary doctoral training across the University of Oxford and Imperial College London. She has led major national multicentre imaging programmes, including the C-MORE study investigating the multiorgan consequences of COVID-19. Dr Raman is Specialty Associate Editor for Cardiovascular Imaging at Circulation, American Heart Association and contributes actively to international cardiovascular imaging education and professional societies. She is committed to developing the next generation of clinician-scientists and supervises DPhil students and clinical research fellows working across cardiovascular imaging, cardiomyopathy and precision medicine.
