Janet T. Scott

Dr Janet T. Scott BSc (hons) BMBCh (oxon) PhD MRCP is a Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics in NHS Highland. She holds a Chief Scientist Office (NRS) Fellowship in Post-infection Syndromes and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine at the University of Aberdeen, with an affiliate Senior Clinical Lecturer role at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research. Her research and clinical practice focus on post-acute infection syndromes, including Long COVID, ME/CFS and post-treatment Lyme disease. She is Clinical Lead for the National Strategic Network for the Long-term Effects of COVID-19 (NHS National Services Scotland), which secured £4.5 million in recurrent Scottish Government funding to extend specialist services beyond Long COVID to include ME/CFS, post-treatment Lyme disease and similar conditions, providing Scotland-wide secondary-care access for these patients for the first time. She authored Scotland’s GP Guide for the Assessment of Adults with Long COVID, which has now been adopted by the WHO Academy for its international training module. She is a member of the WHO Long COVID Training Steering Committee, which wrote the Training module, and the WHO Long COVID Informal Working Group. Dr Scott was NHS Highland Principal Investigator for the STIMULATE-ICP and LOCOMOTION Long COVID trials, serves on the Trial Steering Committee for ERASE I (phase II remdesivir), and is on the leadership team for ERASE II (phase II remdesivir). She co-chaired the ISARIC Global COVID Follow-up Group, leading development of the ISARIC Long COVID Wellbeing Questionnaire which has been used in 17 countries so dar; Pazukhina E et al., BMJ Global Health 2024; 9:e015245). She is on the Steering committee and chaired the Fatigue working group for the Post Hospital COVID study (PHOSP). Earlier in her career she was in-country clinical lead for the Wellcome-supported RAPIDE brincidofovir trial (Chief Investigator Prof Peter Horby) and the Ebola Convalescent Plasma study (Chief Investigator Prof Calum Semple), and first author of one of the earliest studies defining and naming post-Ebola syndrome (Emerging Infectious Diseases 2016; 22:641–646). She is a member of the WHO Long COVID Informal Working Group, the WHO Long COVID Training Steering Committee, and one of the authors of the forthcoming WHO Academy training module on Long COVID.
