Borisov Nikolay

Dr. Borisov is the Principal Investigator and Group Leader at the Armenian Bioinformatics Institute. His professional interests include, but are not limited to, bioinformatics, mathematical biology, computer science, machine learning, and personalized medicine. He spent more than 20 years in academia in computer and data science, machine learning, and AI in Russia, the US, and France. Originally a mathematical physicist with primary interests in modeling ionizing radiation transport (for which he earned a Ph.D. in 1999 at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute and a Habilitation in 2008 at the Moscow Federal Medical Biophysical Center), he switched research interests in 2003, having moved to mathematical biology and bioinformatics. Over the last decade, he has served as the principal investigator in bioinformatics for the Oncobox project. For personalized drug prescription, the Oncobox platform uses gene expression and mutation profiles. Within the Oncobox research paradigm, he proposed two different approaches. The former, a priori scoring, evaluates the abilities of anti-cancer chemotherapeutics to block abnormal changes in molecular pathways. The latter, a posteriori scoring, implies machine learning that distinguishes between patients who respond to a given treatment and those who do not respond. He also developed cross-platform harmonization methods for multi-omics data.
