Stephen J. Lepore

My research in cancer prevention, control, and survivorship, aims to develop theoretically informed interventions to improve the quality of life in cancer survivors and to promote healthy lifestyle choices and behaviors that might lead to the prevention or early detection and treatment of cancer. One of my passions is understanding the impact of cancer on interpersonal relationships and how communication and relationship dynamics with family, friends, health care providers, and other cancer survivors can influence psychosocial adjustment to cancer. I developed the Social Cognitive Processing model of adjustment to cancer to inform the design of individual, group, and Internet-based interventions to improve quality of life in cancer survivors. New research directions focus on using technology (Internet-of-Things, mHealth, electronic medical records) to increase the reach and efficacy of social and behavioral interventions, particularly with high-risk, socially marginalized populations.
