EMMANUEL TIMMY DONKOH

As an Assistant Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Molecular Diagnostics and emerging research leader, my interest has largely been focused on biomarker development for early detection of preventable and re-emerging diseases. My work typically finds expression in implementing screening projects in kidney disease, cervical cancer and female genital schistosomiasis in remote settings. I am fortunate to have a deep understanding of contextual factors related to screening services in sub-Saharan Africa as well as a vast network of responsive community partnerships. I have published on self-sampling, near-patient testing and integrated screening protocols for vulnerable populations such as sex workers and women living with HIV/AIDS in keeping with my long-standing passion for expanding universal access to cervical screening services and removing the inequalities faced by women in accessing healthcare through implementation research, laboratory quality management and development of low-cost molecular diagnostics. I am confident in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), biostatistics and molecular biology tools to implement projects within my area of expertise. I am also the foundation head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science and current head of the Center for Research in Applied Biology at the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani. As a Country Ambassador for the International Papillomavirus Society, which is the global authority on papillomaviruses, I maintain an active interest in community advocacy and health activism for cervical cancer eradication. My research has been enabled by funding from the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the African Research Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ARNTD) and the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC).
