Ammar Al-Chalabi

Professor of Neurology and Complex Disease Genetics at King's College London; NIHR Senior Investigator; Director, King's MND Care and Research Centre; Honorary Consultant Neurologist, King's College Hospital; Theme lead Neuropsychiatry, NIHR Maudsley BRC; Head of the Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience, King's College London. Ammar Al-Chalabi runs a research group focusing on the discovery of genetic, environmental and other risk factors for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (motor neuron disease), understanding disease patterns and how they might arise, and putting this together in clinical trials. To this end he co-leads the Project MinE international whole genome sequencing consortium for ALS, the MND Register of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and is on the executive board of TRICALS and ENCALS, organisations aiming to improve delivery of clinical trials in ALS. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Charcot Young Investigator Prize 1999, Sheila Essey Award 2016, National Silver Clinical Excellence Award 2017, Forbes Norris Award 2020, AMG Healey Award 2020, and NIHR Senior Investigator 2021.
