Judith Breuer

I am a Professor of Virology at UCL and Consultant Clinical Virologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. My research interests include pathogen genomics, molecular epidemiology and pathogen genetic determinants of infectious disease. My interests range from the pathogenesis and spread of viral infections through the development and implementation of cutting edge diagnostic methods to the development of experimental repurposed antiviral regimens for severe infections. I run the only UKAS 15189 accredited metagenomics service which is for the identification of severe undetected infections particularly in encephalitis, hepatitis and other sterile sites. I have developed rapid long read sequencing of hard-to-grow viruses and bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Chlamydia trachomatis directly from clinical samples. I am an expert on vaccines and vaccine preventable diseases, and formerly a member of the UK Joint committee on Vaccines and Immunisations and Chair of the subcommittees on Human Papillomavirus and Varicella Zoster virus vaccines.
