Andrew M. South

As a physician-scientist at Wake Forest School of Medicine, I am fascinated by trying to answer great research questions in novel ways with intentional collaboration. Thematically, I investigate the epidemiology of, and mechanisms behind, the development and progression of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease across the life course. My particular expertise is in the translational applications of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. I combine my breadth and depth of experience and knowledge with that of experts in their respective fields via collaborative transdisciplinary team science across domains. This allows me to let the question drive the selection of the best methods and teams available to answer the question appropriately. My training in pediatric nephrology as well as epidemiology and clinical research provided me with broad insight as well as focused expertise. I have developed skills in preclinical and translational science, causal inference, and bioinformatics . My leadership and mentorship roles provide me with the ability to focus on the big picture and lead our teams through several NIH-funded projects, including through my K23 and L40 grants.
