Researcher profile
James White
I am a Professor and Director in the Centre for Trials Research, DECIPHer (Centre for Development, Evaluation, Complexity and Implementation in Public Health Improvement) and WAVU (Wales Applied Virology Unit) in Cardiff University as well as the CYP-GHRIP (Children and Young People Gambling Harm Research and Innovation Partnership) a multi-institutional award. I sit on research funding panels for the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), Wellcome Trust and Health and Care Research Wales. I mentor mid-career researchers for the NIHR Academy and have an honorary contract with Public Health Wales. My methodological expertise spans randomised controlled trials, cluster randomised trials, pilot and feasibility studies, natural experiments, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, linked routine data studies and real-world evidence generation. The focus of my research is to understand how social, psychological, biological, behavioural and genetic factors from across the life course, influence behaviours which affect health and chronic diseases of major public health importance: cardiovascular disease and mental illness. The ultimate aim of this body of research is disease prevention. I have published over 110 papers in peer reviewed journals and secured £42M (£5.2 as chief investigator) in competitive grant funding.
