Dr Emmanuel O Babafemi
Dr Emmanuel Babafemi is a biomedical scientist with international experience in laboratory medicine in Africa and NHS England for over three decades. He's a senior lecturer practitioner in biomedical sciences of health education, policing and science at the University of Staffordshire since December 2024. Dr Babafemi trained as a medical laboratory scientist at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, in 1993. He obtained a Master of Science degree in Microbiology (Medical option) at the University of Ado-Ekiti (now Ekiti State University), Nigeria, in 2006. He studied for a doctoral degree in biomedical sciences (medical microbiology) at the University of Portsmouth, UK, in 2018. His thesis was on the effectiveness of the real-time polymerase chain reaction assay for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from pathological samples. He worked for a decade with proven technical and analytical experience and ability to impact knowledge and engage a group/individual based on knowledge acquired in different clinical and non-clinical settings in hospitals and exposure to different technologies from the low to high spectrum of automation across NHS England Pathology Laboratory. And later left as Senior Biomedical Scientist (Microbiology)/Deputy Laboratory Manager to join the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool, UK, in 2019. He was a senior lecturer/clinical placement tutor and programme leader in applied biomedical science in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences of Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool. He was substantially involved in the BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science degree and the BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science Practitioner (Biomedical Science) for the IBMS Registration Portfolio Training. His areas of research interest are infectious diseases (Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacteria other than tuberculosis [MOTT]), etc. Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, Antimicrobial Stewardship/Antimicrobial Resistance. Systematic review and meta-analysis of diagnostic test accuracy. He has conducted research in infectious diseases and antimicrobial chemotherapy in universities/organisations in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Nigeria. Some of his recent research work is on antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship. He participated as a volunteer/mentor in the LabSkills Africa project by the Royal College of Pathologists, London, for improving laboratory medicine, for which he led the infectious diseases and technical skills curriculum between 2014 and 2016. He was involved in teaching the online modules/e-learning on improving the mentees’ technical skills. He is a lead visitor for the Health and Care Professions Council; a Fellow, Chartered Scientist and Mentor, Institute of Biomedical Science; a Fellow, Advance Higher Education; a member, Microbiology Society; and a delegated member of the Royal College of Pathologists, London.
