Carlos Ibáñez

I‘m a Addiction psychiatry professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health of the University of Chile. I have trained many psychiatrist and clinical psychologist in Substance Use Disorders (SUD) Treatment. I have done my PhD research on the role of the Interoceptive System in the physiopathology of addiction, and I have worked both in prevention os SUD and in Public Health Policiy/Drug Policy. In my professional career I have worked in different levels of the addiction field to serve as a bridge between clinical practice, research, teaching and public policy. I worked as Senior Advisor of the National Agency on Drug Policy (SENDA) and as a consultant for the Chilean Ministry of Health and Ministry of Interior, and I have been invited as an expert by International Agencies (WHO and UNODC) to many national and international forums and panels that addresses substance use disorders and health related issues. In 2015, I was part of the experts that contribute to the World Health Organization publication about Cannabis “The health and social effects of nonmedical cannabis use”. I’m part of the National Medical Board of Psychiatry and both national and international scientific societies, I was part of the directors board of the Chilean National Psychiatric association (SONESPSYN) and founder of the chilean chapter of the International Society of Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP). I have participated as an expert in many national substance use treatment guidelines for SUD and as Investigator in national grants, studying the use of social media for epidemiological surveillance of Cannabis use and perceptions and adaptaing and implementing SUD prevention interventions.
